Frequently asked questions about the pneumonia vaccine:

According to the CDC, people five years or younger and people 50 years or older should get the pneumonia vaccine. In addition, people who are 19-49 with certain chronic underlying medical conditions like asthma should work with their pharmacist to determine if getting the pneumonia vaccine makes sense for them.

No, you cannot get pneumonia from getting a vaccine to protect you against pneumonia. While the pneumonia bacteria is used within the vaccine it is inactivated, and is designed to help your body’s immune system recognize the bacteria, if exposed, and fight it.

Side effects of the pneumonia vaccine are short-term, and include muscle aches, mild joint pain and/or fever.

For most people, you only need to get the pneumonia vaccine once. However, it is recommended to speak with your pharmacist for specific guidance.

The pneumonia vaccine is recommended for:

  • Adults aged 50 and older

  • Children under 5 years old

  • People with weakened immune systems (e.g., due to cancer treatment or other conditions)

  • Individuals with chronic health conditions, such as asthma, COPD, diabetes, or heart disease

If you're unsure whether you should receive the vaccine, it’s best to consult with your ACME Markets pharmacist  to determine what’s right for you.
